Hormonal Optimisation – What’s the Big Deal?
Ever wondered what makes you wake up even before the alarm rings when you have an early morning flight to catch? What brings about the onslaught of acne that heralds the onset of puberty in most teenagers? What allows a young lady to have a regular healthy menstrual cycle, without the dreaded PMS?
The answer to all of these lies in the intricate balance of hormones that is vitally important for even the most basic functions of our bodies.
Estrogen and Progesterone – the Secret is in the Balance
The fine balance of Estrogen and Progesterone varies in the different phases of the menstrual cycle, which is why timing is of the essence when doing a hormonal test for women. The critical part is the luteal phase, which is after ovulation has occurred, in the second half of the monthly cycle.
And it is not enough to have the individual hormones in the normal range. The 2 hormones have to be balanced with each other. If the estrogen is at the high end of normal while the progesterone is at the low end, this results in Estrogen Dominance with resulting complains of painful cramping, heavier bleeding and even irregular menstrual cycles. If this is a common complaint with every monthly cycle, it can be easily addressed just by optimizing the balance. Besides fixing the menstrual cycle and the PMS, this has the additional benefit of reducing the risk for breast cancer, uterine and ovarian cancers too.
Likewise, in the perimenopausal years, the balance tends to get skewed resulting in the common complaints of hot flushes, mood swings and poor sleep.
